On November 4, 2023, the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) La Union Chapter successfully conducted Earth Dash 2 Bauang: Mangrove Planting, Enrichment, and Rehabilitation Project in Bakawan Eco-Tourism Park at Barangay Parian Oeste, Bauang, La Union. This environmental initiative aimed to restore and protect marine ecosystems by engaging the community in hands-on conservation efforts. Held in a designated marine conservation and mangrove tourism area, the event emphasized the vital role of mangroves in coastal protection, biodiversity preservation, and climate change mitigation.
The activity brought together approximately 212 volunteers, including Red Cross Youth members, barangay representatives, and environmental advocates, all united in their commitment to sustainability.
The program commenced with the Seeds of Commitment ceremony, where participants pledged their dedication to environmental preservation. This was followed by an insightful environmental session led by the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO), which highlighted the ecological significance of mangroves in sustaining marine life and preventing coastal erosion. Adding to the meaningful discussions, Anjali Camacho Pradeep Kumar, La Union’s Mutia ti Agri-Turismo 2023, delivered an inspiring talk on the role of youth in environmental sustainability, motivating participants to take an active part in conservation efforts.
The highlight of the event was the planting of 150 mangrove seedlings, a crucial step in rehabilitating the coastal ecosystem and ensuring long-term environmental benefits for the community. Volunteers enthusiastically participated, recognizing the importance of collective action in protecting natural resources.
To further promote camaraderie and community spirit, the event also featured group dancing and a rest and recreation segment for families, making the activity both meaningful and enjoyable for everyone involved.
This initiative was made possible through the invaluable support of the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Bauang, the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO), the Provincial Government Environment and Natural Resources Office (PGENRO), the Bakawan Tourism Council, and Cosmos Bakery, which generously provided refreshments for the volunteers. Through collaborative efforts like Earth Dash: Mangrove Planting, the PRC La Union Chapter continues to champion youth-led environmental action, fostering a more sustainable and resilient future for coastal communities.
