Standing on the soft, damp soil of Bakawan Eco-Tourism Park, I felt the significance of what we were about to do. As a facilitator of Earth Dash 2: Mangrove Planting, Enrichment, and Rehabilitation Project, I witnessed firsthand the power of collective action and its impact on our coastal environment.
On November 4, 2023, over 200 volunteers from the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) La Union Chapter, local barangays, and environmental groups gathered with a shared mission: to restore and protect our marine ecosystems.
The morning began with the Seeds of Commitment ceremony—a pledge to uphold environmental conservation. It was a solemn yet empowering moment, reminding us that small actions lead to significant change.
Then came the highlight of the event—the planting of 150 mangrove seedlings. Volunteers of all ages worked together, digging holes, carefully placing seedlings, and securing them in the soft mud. The energy was infectious; every participant, from students to local officials, embraced the responsibility of nurturing our environment. Seeing hands covered in soil and feet sinking into the wetland, I was reminded that conservation is a hands-on, heartfelt effort.
To end the day, we celebrated our efforts with group dancing and recreational activities, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose. The laughter and camaraderie were just as valuable as the seedlings we planted, proving that sustainability is not just about preservation but also about people coming together for a cause bigger than themselves. As I left the site, glancing back at the rows of newly planted mangroves, I felt hopeful. Each seedling was a promise—a step toward a more sustainable and resilient future for our coastal communities.
